Editorial standards
The rules every story we publish follows — written down so you can hold us to them.
Every fact, linked to a source
Each story links to the agenda, ordinance, budget line, meeting video timestamp or public record it relies on. If we cannot link it, we do not print it — or we label it clearly as unverified and say what we are doing to verify it.
Nonpartisan by charter
We never endorse candidates, rate politicians or take positions on ballot measures. Our coverage describes what is proposed, what it does, who decides and when — never whom to vote for.
Plain language
Stories are written at an 8th-grade reading level, and legal terms are explained on first use, always. Spanish and Haitian Creole summaries are planned as the newsroom grows.
High Alert criteria
A High Alert requires: (1) county-wide or multi-county impact, (2) a near-term hard deadline, (3) consequences that are expensive or impossible to reverse, and (4) sign-off from two editors plus a completed source check. Most weeks there are none — by design.
Demonstration and sample content
Any unpublished draft, demonstration figure or placeholder is labeled “sample content” on the page. We never present illustrative numbers as verified reporting.
